Taking a cross-country trip can be a lot of fun because there are so many amazing things to do and see. Before you start off on your journey, you need to be sure that you take the time to make sure your car is ready for the extensive travel. Use the following checklist to ensure you properly prepare your vehicle for the trip. 

Have the Oil and Oil Filter Changed

Before you travel a long distance, have the oil and oil filter in the car changed. Oil travels through the engine to lubricate the inner workings that operate the car. If the engine is not properly lubricated, it could lock up and cause the vehicle to stop operating.

Have All Fluids Topped Off

Have the mechanic top off the brake fluid, washer fluid, and power steering fluid while you are there. The brake fluid helps to ensure the brakes work properly, washer fluid allows you to easily clean your windshield when something is obstructing your view, and power steering fluid allows you to easily turn the wheel of your vehicle as needed. With all of these fluids properly topped off, driving across the country should be much safer and easier for you.

Get Your Tires Rotated and Aligned

Have the mechanic rotate and align your tires too. He or she needs to check the tire pressure to make sure that the tires are filled enough to be able to make the trip. Rotating the tires ensures that they wear evenly and decreases the chance of one blowing during the trip.  

Replace Your Windshield Wipers

Before you head out, replace the windshield wipers on the car. The wipers are essential in rain, snow, and sleet to ensure clear vision when operating the vehicle.

Pack an Emergency Kit

You need to be sure that you prepare for a possible breakdown too. Be sure to pack food, water, blankets, and things to entertain your children if you find yourself having to wait for a tow truck. Also, be sure that you have an emergency kit packed for your vehicle that has jumper cables and flares in it to jump the battery if needed and warn other drivers if your vehicle breaks down. Also, be sure to make sure that you have a spare tire and jack readily available to you so that you can change a tire if it blows.

Heading out for your road trip will be less stressful if you know you are properly prepared.
